Students completing our program will understand the 12 core functions of a Certified Addiction Counselor, including screening, intake, assessment, treatment planning, and aftercare. For those seeking to counsel addicts, our program is an inexpensive alternative to a psychology degree.

City Vision University is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission, and is an Approved Academic Education Partner for NAADAC, which means that its courses are approved for addiction counseling credit in most states.

Program Outcomes

The program leads to a Bachelor's degree (120 credits). We accept transfer of up to 90 credits from any accredited college. Students can use our prior learning assessment program to apply for up to 30 credits for unaccredited ministry training and experience.

Students who complete the program will:

  • Describe each of the 12 core functions and 8 competencies of addiction counselors to be academically prepared to become a certified addiction counselor. 
  • Demonstrate the essential practices of addiction treatment including screening, intake, assessment, treatment planning and aftercare. (Core Functions 1-5, Competencies 1, 2, 3, 4) 
  • Use basic counseling skills such as effective listening, assessment, crisis intervention, group therapy and working with other professionals (Core Functions 6, 8, 12, Competency 4, 5) 
  • Apply basic counseling professional practices including ethics, working with various client groups, case management and record keeping skills. (Core Functions 7, 10, 11, Competencies 7, 8) 
  • Apply understanding of other issues related to addiction recovery such a mental illness, family dynamics and sexual and spiritual issues. (Core Function 9, Competency 6) 
  • Integrate Christian principles and counseling theories in an ethical manner in both Christian and secular counseling environments.
  • Develop and display a commitment to a plan of personal growth and life balance needed to serve effectively in their field in the long-term (cognitive and affective domain). 

This program generally fulfills the formal education requirements of addiction counselor certification in most states. City Vision  cannot guarantee that our program will meet the licensing standards of all states.  Please check with the requirements of your state to learn what else you must do to become a Certified Addiction Counselor (SOC 21-1011).

Qualifying students can get their tuition fully covered by Pell grants. Students may also use Federal loans or GI Bill benefits. We provide a 25% discount to military/veterans and staff at Rescue Missions and Salvation Army and a 50% discount to ministry interns.
